James Lawson, born in Basildon, started his footballing career at local League club Southend United as a trainee.

At just 18-years-old he had a dream debut with the Shrimpers scoring in a 2-1 win against Oldham in League One. Lawson remained in the starting line-up for the next few weeks until injury took it's toll.

The young striker, who can also play wide-right, was then loaned out to Grimsby Town, making just a single appearance for The Mariners. James returned to Roots Hall after just two weeks, claiming to be homesick.

Lawson's next loan venture was to Bournemouth where he made 4 appearances spanning over a month.

"He's not getting any games here so it's better for him to go out and play and we'll monitor him." Claimed Steve Tilson.

Dagenham & Redbridge was his third loan and final loan spell of the 2006/07 season where he turned out 3 times as a substitute.

Lawson signed a one-year contract for The Blues on 2nd August 2007, after a single appearance as trialist against Billericay on 31st July.
