The Gravesend-born striker signed on as a trainee for Gillingham in 2005, and put pen-to-paper on a professional deal on 8th May 2007. He made his debut for the Gills on 20th February 2007, in the 1-0 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion replacing Dean McDonald as a substitute in the 66th minute.
During the 2007/08 season, Pugh joined Welling United on loan in October and Maidstone United in February 2008. He made six appearaces in the Blue Square South for Welling scoring twice. He also scored twice during his spell at Maidstone in the Ryman Premier in four games.
The following season, 2008/09, the young striker joined Folkestone Invicta in August on a month's loan. He joined Grays Athletic on loan in January 2009.
Gills' manager Mark Stimson, recalled Pugh in March 2009, but stated "He came back but Grays drove me mad, begged me, everything they could to take him again because he did so well for them and he scored the winning goal last Saturday."
Stimson also promised the youngster a contract for the following season, "He doesn’t need to worry about next season, that will be taken care of and he will be offered a deal here."
His loan was later extended at The Rec until the end of the 2008/09 season.
