Match report |
Grays Athletic have snapped up striker Lee Boylan from Canvey Island and he made his debut in Saturday's 3-0 defeat at home to Plymouth Argyle.

Grays chairman Mick Woodward was delighted at capturing 27-year-old Boylan's services and pointed out that everyone would benefit if he proved a success.

"We have done a deal with Canvey and it's all based on how well we do in the FA Cup and Trophy and where we finish in the league," Woodward said.

"At the end of the day if we do well, Canvey do well. If we don't do well and Lee doesn't do well, we're all stuffed."

Woodward would not be drawn on figures involved if Boylan, who scored 178 goals in five seasons with Canvey, proved a big hit.

But he insisted: "You can forget £25,000 or even £15,000.

"Obviously in different circumstances Canvey would love to have kept him, but now they're in Ryman Division One rather than the Conference their wage structure couldn't possibly have covered his wages.

"Lee's not promised us anything and we've not promised him anything long-term.

"We've been very honest with each other. Lee's made no secret of the fact that he wants to play in the Football League.

"He's with us for the season but, after January, he can talk to anyone he likes. But it's down to us at Grays to perform on the pitch, get into the Football League, and persuade Lee to sign a two-year deal."

Canvey's new boss John Batch confirmed that the Park Lane club were happy with the deal and added: "It had to happen it's as simple as that."

Boylan took part in his first action for Grays on Saturday when they hosted Championship side Argyle in a pre-season friendly.

A hat-trick from striker Nick Chadwick saw the West Country Pilgrims to a 3-0 win, the second such defeat for Graythey Grays opened their pre-season campaign with a disappointing defeat at the hands of Conference South newcomers Braintree Town.
